Therianthropy: The term "therianthropy" comes from the Greek theríon, meaning "wild animal" or "beast" (implicitly mammalian); and anthrōpos, meaning "human being."
Although there are therianthropes of all manner, the most common and thus, have their own terms, are:
- Lycanthrope (Wolf)
- Cynanthrope (Dog/Canine)
- Ailuranthrope (Cat/feline)
These creatures are the only natural enemies for the vampires. The drinking of a Therianthrope's blood, even if just a little bit consumed, would burn up a vampire's insides and instantly kill them. Or if the blood were to get into a vampire's wounds, or eyes, they would also become infected and die. They have incredible strength, but they're not quite as fast as vampires. They have naturally heightened senses, and have a total of four forms; human form, complete animal form, half form, and a beast form. Though they have a longer than average lifespan than humans, it's only about twice, to three times as long. As long as they don't get killed. They look the age they are up until about adulthood, then their aging can slow down at any point in their adult lives.
There are no half breeds. Either you're born a wereanimal, or you're turned. Whether both or only one of your parents are therianthropes, you're considered a pureblood, or "purebred/purebreed" if you were born into this species. Those who are turned are called "turned folk" or "turnbred/turnbreed". However, there isn't much difference between the two. These creatures can turn at will.
However, on the night before a full moon, during a full moon, and the night after a full moon, they turn into their beast forms without say. They will be stuck in this form until morning. This goes for either type of breed.
It is possible for therianthropes of different animal types to have children, however, the children would NOT be a mixed animal. They will be whatever animal belongs to the dominant parental gene; whether it's the father's genes, or the mother's genes that are more dominant. (i.e. wererabbit and werecat have a child, if the wererabbit is the dominant gene, then the child would be a wererabbit, and vice versa)
Some wereanimals, are capable of producing mixed children; weredogs with other weredogs, weredogs and werewolves, wolves with other wolf types, and any domestic cat therianthropes with other domestic cats.
Turning can be quite painful. But this depends on what form they are trying to take.
Half form: This is a simple matter of bringing for specific attributes of your animal side. Ears, tail, eyes, fangs, and claws will all draw forth in this form. It is not painful to shift into this form.
Full animal form: Taking this form happens in an instance, but it does tend to be a bit painful. But the change is so instantaneous that the pain goes by almost unnoticed once used to it.
Beast form: Though this is the strongest form of them all, it's also the most painful. The bones break and reform, organs fail and the heart goes into arrest so they can all shift and change. The skin splits and peels away and the teeth fall out to give way to a new set. This works for both taking beast form, and returning to human form from beast form. This change can take anywhere from several seconds, to several minutes, depending on whether the wereanimal is a purebreed or a turnbreed, and how much practice they've had. Beast form may not be the prettiest of the forms, but it is a necessary form if a therianthrope needs to fight. In human form, they're stronger than the average human, but not nearly strong enough to take on other creatures. To access the strength that comes along with their species, they must take one of these three forms. Beast form offers them full strength.
Depending on the form they're taking, their clothes can shift with them, with practice of course. For half form, aside from a needed place for their tail and space for the claws on their feet, the clothes are otherwise unaffected. When it comes to full animal form, yes, clothes can be shifted along with them, with enough practice. However, when it comes to beast form, clothes do not shift with them. If they're wearing clothes for beast form shifting, the clothes will rip and tear from the body.
POWERS: This is a very important part to pay attention to! Now, therianthropes are allowed to have a few powers. HOWEVER, they don't appear to have any psychic powers. All of their abilities center around personal physical powers and powers that are in tune with nature. What I mean by this, are things that are more empowerments, enhancements, immunities, absorptions, and so on. Or things that need physical contact in order to be used. These creatures cannot wield elements with the exceptions of certain "breath" powers and dermal armors. Also, it's best if the powers connect somehow. So try to keep that in mind when choosing your abilities.
Some of the natural abilities might change slightly depending on the type they are (i.e. werewolf being strength, werecat being agile and a contortionist, a wererabbit being all strength in the legs, allowing them to jump at incredible heights and so forth). These things are a given and don't need to be listed as powers.
Powers cannot be used in full animal form. However, they are still accessible in half form. They can also be accessible in beast form if the therian has accepted their animal side which gives them consciousness during this time.
If you have any questions, please find your way to the Species FAQ in the Species Info & More section and post them there.
Some things have been brought to my attention, and as they weren't asked in the FAQs, I will address them here, now.
Q. Can therians in beast form have sexual relations with a human/humanoid?
A. Yes. They can. More often than not this is in the form of non-consensual relations. But they do have the capability of sexual relations with a human or human like creature.
Q. For turnbreeds, when they're first turned, is the first shift during the next full moon?
A. Yes. They will experience "oddities", which will grow more frequent and instinctual urges that will grow stronger the closer the full moon approaches. Please remember the change will actually be over the course of three nights; The night before a full moon, during, and the night after a full moon. These are the nights when the moon is at its fullest and thus has the strongest pull.
Please please please ask any questions you may have in the FAQ sections. You may not be the only one that wants to know the answer. So it's important to post these questions where they can be answered publicly. Thank you!
