Background: Tanner was born into the Inori clan. His father, who he was "named" after (Tanner being his father's last name), was an American soldier on the U.S. army base, while his mother, of Japanese descent, was a blood slave in the clan. She educated him from the time he could talk in the ways of vampires, what it meant to be part of the clan. He likely, would have fallen into line perfectly, he would have had respect and a sense of duty when it came to the clan, if it hadn't been for the terrible event of witnessing his older half-sister's rape and murder. It had been a vampire from some rival clan, who had simply...felt like it. His hatred for the vampire race was not easily hidden after that. It was then that Tanner's gift surfaced.
Ryuko knew he had to help Tanner, help him become a strong and meaningful man, how to use his new gift. He knew Tanner might hate him for it, but he separated from his mother, with her approval. Tanner didn't always like it, in fact, he generally hated it, but he himself wanted to become stronger, and so they trained. Ryuko taught him, trained him, put him through rigorous tests, even to the point where Tanner thought he would die. But it was all for his sake. And it paid off. Be became one of the most proficient fighters Ryuko had ever seen. He was the perfect soldier, knowing how to handle all firearms, and most other weapons, and being an expert in all crafts, whether they be for land, air, or sea. Tanner's mother was returned to him on his sixteenth birthday.
However, his sister's killer was still at large, and despite Ryuko's efforts, could not get him brought to justice. Tanner wanted to go after him, wanted to kill him. But Ryuko refused to let him, and decided to test Tanner's loyalty by giving him a vampire ward to look after; Bernadette Ingles. Despite the fact that she was a vampire, there was so much about her, about her situation, that reminded Tanner of his sister. It was the first real friendship Tanner had made, and soon the two were bonded like siblings. She treated him like a little brother, and he took care of her like she was his sister. She was so kind and gentle natured, that he couldn't help but listen to her. She convinced him to, for the time being, stay and protect what was left of his family, rather than going after the killer. At twenty-three, he was made Head of Mortal Security.
