Familiars
A witch's familiar is an animal in which the magical being can draw power/energy from. This animal can be of any kind of animal, within reason, though most are animals such as cats, dogs, birds, and other smaller creatures.
A witch does not choose their familiar, a familiar chooses their witch. Once a familiar chooses its witch, they become soulbound to each other. If a familiar dies, a witch will live on, however, if a witch dies, their familiar dies with them.
Familiars are often seen with some sort of trinket attached to them (a charm on a collar, a band around a leg, etc.). These trinkets provide familiars with the ability to speak by ways of verbal communication. This means a familiar must be careful about when they choose to speak to their witch if in public. Once a witch reaches a specific level in their capabilities, a familiar may be granted a human form. However, if a familiar loses this trinket, or it gets taken, they will lose both their ability to speak and the ability to take a human form (if they have one) until the trinket is returned.
It's a familiars duty to watch over their witch, guide them, and keep them safe. It's also their duty to keep a witch from straying down a dark path.
Familiars are considered magical creatures, but they aren't capable of using complex magic themselves aside from aiding in potions making and lending their energy to their witch, and tapping into the enchantment of their trinket to speak like a person, or take human form at will (again, if they even have one). They also may be able to levitate small, inanimate objects with practice. Again, this is to aid their witches.
Dark witches do not have familiars. If a witch goes dark, it twists their soul, and the binding breaks. This can be heartbreaking for a familiar, to the point it may even kill them.
A witch whose familiar dies, may be chosen again by another familiar, if one comes along that wishes to be bound to that witch. However, if a familiar looses their witch to dark magic, they will be incapable of binding themselves to another witch ever again. This is one of the reasons why losing their witch to dark magic may potentially kill them.
